Rift Valley fever

Virus disease originating south of the Sahara. Caused by a bunyavirus, it is hosted by sheep and cattle, and spread by mosquitoes to humans, causing an acute feverish illness. Mortality is high in severe cases, and there may be serious complications.

An outbreak of Rift Valley fever in northeast Kenya affected thousands and killed more than 300 at the beginning of 1998. The outbreak was triggered by flooding and subsequent explosion in the mosquito population.
