right ascension

In astronomy, coordinate on the celestial sphere that corresponds to longitude on the surface of the Earth. It is measured in hours, minutes, and seconds eastwards from one of the two points where the Sun's path, the ecliptic, intersects the celestial equator; this point is called the vernal (spring) equinox, because the Sun crosses it in the northern hemisphere spring, when apparently moving northward in the sky.
