Rigoletto

Opera by Verdi (libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse), produced at the Teatro la Fenice, Venice, on 11 March 1851. In the story, Rigoletto's daughter Gilda is abducted by the Duke of Mantua, who has designs on her. Rigoletto rescues her, but by now she loves the Duke. Rigoletto arranges his murder, but Gilda substitutes herself instead.
