Fort Riley

Military reservation in Riley and Geary counties, northeast Kansas. It is situated on the Kansas River, to the north of Junction City. It was established in 1852 on the Santa Fe Trail to protect westward-bound pioneers from hostile American Indians, and became a cavalry post in 1855. When the Kansas Pacific Railroad was built after the Civil War, the fort was a command centre for operations against American Indian uprisings. It is now the headquarters of the First Infantry Division. A cavalry museum is located here.
