Riley, Terry (1935- )

US composer and saxophonist. He belongs to the minimalist school of composers. His works involve repeated patterns and series, and contain freedom for improvisation. He studied at Berkeley, California, and since 1970 has been influenced by Indian music.

Ensemble

Spectra for six instruments (1959); string trio (1965); Keyboard Studies (1965); Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band for saxophone, tape, and electronics (1968); Rainbow in Curved Air (1970); Sunrise of the Planetary Dream Collector and The Medicine Wheel (works which reflect his interest in astrology) for string quartet (1981, 1983); the cycle Salome Dances for Peace (formed from five of his nine string quartets, 1988).
