Rimini, Francesca da (died c. 1288)

Italian noblewoman. Francesca, daughter of Guido da Polenta, Lord of Ravenna, was betrothed to Gianciotto Malatesta da Rimini. Their match was supposed to reconcile the two families but Gianciotto was reputedly disfigured and Francesca fell in love with his attractive younger brother, Paolo. Giancotto killed the lovers and their story has inspired many artistic interpretations, including those of Dante and Cabanel.
