Rinaldo

Cantata for tenor solo, male chorus, and orchestra by Brahms, Op. 50, on a ballad by Goethe, performed at Vienna on 28 February 1869.

Opera by Handel (libretto by Giacomo Rossi, from a sketch based on Tasso by Aaron Hill), produced at the Queen's Theatre, Haymarket, London, on 24 February 1711. It was Handel's first London opera. The story begins as the knight Rinaldo prepares for victory over Saracen king Argante. The heathen temporarily avoids defeat by enlisting the help of the sorceress Armida in abducting Almirena, Rinaldo's love. But Rinaldo saves her; Argante and Armida flee.

No: the reason was this: that from the fatal experiences of the fishery there hung a terrible prestige of perilousness about such a whale as there did about Rinaldo Rinaldini, insomuch that most fishermen were content to recognise him by merely touching their tarpaulins when he would be discovered lounging by them on the sea, without seeking to cultivate a more intimate acquaintance.
Thus by keeping it secret thou wilt not escape thy sorrow, but rather thou wilt shed tears unceasingly, if not tears of the eyes, tears of blood from the heart, like those shed by that simple doctor our poet tells us of, that tried the test of the cup, which the wise Rinaldo, better advised, refused to do; for though this may be a poetic fiction it contains a moral lesson worthy of attention and study and imitation.
