Ring Nebula

Planetary nebula in the constellation of Lyra in the northern hemisphere, appearing as a bright oval-shaped ring with a dark centre. The nebula is in reality a spherical shell of hot gas that has been blown away from a faint blue-white dwarf star at the centre. It was discovered by French astronomer Antoine Darquier (1718–1802) in 1779. It is also known as Messier 57 (M57).
