Ringwood

Town in Passaic County, north New Jersey; population (1990) 12,600. It is situated in the Ramapo Mountains, on the Wanaque River, 26 km/16 mi northwest of Paterson, along the New York state line. With the Ringwood State Park, lakes, and Wanaque Reservoir nearby, Ringwood is a popular tourist destination, as well as a residential suburb.

Iron was discovered near here in 1730, and the first forge built nine years later. Extensive mines and works followed, and Ringwood became a major centre for the production of munitions, cannons, and chain for the Continental Army. The iron mine here continued producing until 1931. The area was given to the state in 1936 and Ringwood State Park, which adjoins the town to the east, was created in 1939. In the park are ironmaster Robert Erskine's home, Ringwood Manor (a National Historic Landmark), and the State Botanical Gardens at Skylands (a 1924 mansion).
