Rioni

River in Transcaucasia, which flows 327 km/203 mi from the southern slopes of the Caucasus Mountains to Poti on the Black Sea. The river's course lies entirely within the republic of Georgia; the main cities on its route are Kutaisi and Poti. There are a number of hydroelectric schemes on the river, which is also heavily used for irrigation.

The Rioni flowed through the ancient country of Colchis, to which the Greek mythological hero Jason, and his Argonauts, journeyed in search of the Golden Fleece. The river's Greek name means ‘pheasant’, which legend claims was introduced into Europe by the Argonauts.
