Ripon

Town in Fond du Lac County, east Wisconsin; population (1990) 7,200. It is situated on Silver Creek, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Fond du Lac, in an agricultural area. The town produces canned foods, flour, and home appliances. It is home to Ripon College (1851). Ripon was settled in 1844 by Fourierists (followers of the French socialist Charles Fourier); their socialistic community was disbanded in 1850. Ripon is widely regarded as the birthplace of the Republican party, which was organized at a meeting held at the Little White Schoolhouse here on 20 March 1854. A convention later that year at Jackson, Michigan, founded the party.
