Northern rebellion

In English history, rising in 1569–70 led by the earls of Northumberland and Westmorland in support of the Catholic Mary Queen of Scots. They demanded that Mary be declared Elizabeth I's successor and the restoration of Catholicism. The bishop of Durham was seized and the mass was restored, but promised Spanish support did not arrive and the rising was suppressed. The earls were forced to flee to Scotland and 400 rebels were executed.
