Ritter, Karl (1779-1859)

German geographer, born in Quedlinburg, who was appointed professor of geography at Berlin in 1820. Ritter was one of the first to make a wide comparative study of geographical science. His chief work is Die Erdkunde im Verhaltnis zur Natur und zur Geschichte des Menschen/Geography in Relation to Nature and the History of Mankind (10 volumes; 1822-59).
