Ritter, Peter (1763-1846)

German cellist and composer. He studied composition with Vogler and cello with Danzi, whom he succeeded in the Mannheim orchestra in 1784. He became the orchestra's conductor in 1803.

operas Der Eremit auf Formentara (Kotzebue, 1788), Die lustigen Weiber (after Shakespeare's Merry Wives, 1794), and c. 20 others; plays with music; church music, oratorio Das verlorene Paradies (after Milton, 1819); cello concertos; chamber music; cello and piano sonatas.
