This five day religious celebration (held in Spring each year) is a true feast for the senses, as monks dress as saints and demons to re-enact the great battles of Buddhist mythology, ritual dances are performed, music is played, and copious amounts of barley wine and butter tea are drunk. The Mehinaku tribe shook bells on their ankles as they stamped their feet, or rattled their rattles, or blew down reed instrument tubes for ritual dances and prayers that were stunningly out of context in the half-full auditorium and genteel South Bank surroundings. The Ritual Dances from The Midsummer Marriage mark the birth centenary of composer Michael Tippett, and respond to a Spanish request for something English. |
