Garonne

River in southwest France, rising in the Vale of Aran on the Spanish side of the Pyrenees and flowing to the Gironde estuary; length 575 km/357 mi. The river is not navigable.

The course of the Garonne is generally northwesterly. In France it passes through the départements of Haute-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, and Gironde. Its tributaries are the Save, Gers, Tarn, Lot, and Dordogne. It enters the Atlantic via the Gironde estuary. At Toulouse the Canal du Midi links it with the Mediterranean. At Bordeaux it flows between the vineyards of Entre-Deux-Mers and Médoc.
