drainage basin

Area of land drained by a river system (a river and its tributaries). It includes the surface run-off in the water cycle, as well as the water table. Drainage basins are separated by watersheds. A drainage basin is an example of an open system because it is open to inputs from outside, such as precipitation, and is responsible for outputs out of the system, such as output of water into the sea and evaporation of water into the atmosphere.

The nine chapters address topics that include: the history and current trajectory of water management; the biophysical dynamics of the river basin ecosystem; the evidence base for catchment planning and management; management of land, water, and rivers in the developed world; sample trajectories regarding river basins and development; and sustainable river basin management with uncertain knowledge.
Since river basins cut across municipal, provincial and in some cases national borders, the WFD aims to harmonize water policy and water management of the river basin as a whole, in close consultation with stakeholders including industries, municipalities, basin authorities, NGOs, government institutions and the public at large.
