Rivera

Department in northeast Uruguay, on the Brazilian border; area 9,370 sq km/3,618 sq mi; population (1996) 89,475. The capital is the city of Rivera. Cattle and sheep farming are the main economic activities, but fruit and tobacco are also grown on a significant scale.

Rivera

Capital of the department of the same name in northeast Uruguay, built on two small hills on the frontier with Brazil; population (1996) 57,316. Rivera lies immediately opposite the Brazilian town of Santana do Livramento, and is on the main railway line leading from Montevideo to southern Brazil. Near to the town is a dam on the River Cuñapirú.
