Rivera, Fabian Alarcon (1947– )

Ecuadorean politician and president 1997–98 of an interim government.

Rivera was a member of the centre-left Frente Radical Alfarista (FRA; Radical Alfarista Front), and held many public administrative positions, mostly in Quito. Between 1984–1988, he was the provincial mayor of Pichincha, and president of the consortium of provincial councils of Ecuador in 1984. He also held important national congress committee positions 1990–94. He was a republican deputy 1990–92 and 1994–96, director of the FRA 1994–96, vice president in 1995, and president of the national congress 1996–97. In 1997, he was elected by congress to be president until August 1998 after President Bucaram was ousted from power because of ‘mental incapacity’.

Rivera was born in Quito, and educated in social sciences and legal studies at the Universidad Católica de Quito.
