Rivera, Julio Adalberto (1921-1973)

El Salvadorean soldier and politician, president 1962-67 and founder of the National Conciliation Party (PCN). His government relied on the support of the conservative planter elite, but took action to set minimum wages for agricultural workers and his presidency was marked by economic advance.

An army lieutenant colonel, he led the five-member junta (Civil-Military Directory) that, in January 1961, overthrew a recently established radical junta. Rivera formed the conservative-reformist PCN and was popularly elected president in 1962.

He was succeeded as president by another army officer, Fidel Sánchez Hernández.
