Riverton

Town in Salt Lake County, north-central Utah; population (1990) 11,300. It is situated on the Jordan River, and is a residential suburb 24 km/15 mi south of Salt Lake City.

Riverton

Town in Fremont County, west-central Wyoming; population (1990) 9,200. It is surrounded on all sides by the Wind River Indian Reservation, and lies 35 km/22 mi northeast of Lander. An 1830s fur post was here at the confluence of the Wind and Popo Agie rivers. After tribal land was purchased in 1904, agriculture flourished. The town is a processing and trade centre for dairy, livestock, beet, potato, and other crop producers. It had a 1960s uranium boom, and now has varied light industry. It is home to Central Wyoming College (1906).
