Rivlin, Alice

Rivlin, Alice (Mitchell) (1931– )

US economist and government official. In 1993 she was appointed deputy director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Clinton administration. A respected analyst of the US economy, she has written several studies of economic problems, including Economic Choices (1987) and Caring for the Disabled Elderly: Who Will Pay? (1988). She served as vice chair of the Federal Reserve Board 1996–99, chaired the District of Columbia Financial Assistance and Management Authority 1998–2001, and became a member of the board of directors of the New York Stock Exchange in 2005.

She was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of a nuclear physicist. She graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1952 and earned a PhD from Radcliffe in 1958. She became a staff member of the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC, in 1957, was deputy assistant at the Department of Health, Education and Welfare 1966–69, and was the first director of the Congressional Budget Office 1975–83. She was director of economic studies at the Brookings Institution 1983–87 and then a senior fellow 1987–92 and again from 1999.
