Rivonia trial

Court proceedings begun October 1963 in South Africa against a group of ten people, including Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela. They were accused of sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the South African government, and nine were found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment June 1964.

The accused, senior African National Congress officials and leaders of its multiracial armed offshoot Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), were arrested July 1963 at Lilliesleaf Farm outside Rivonia near Johannesburg.
