Rizal

The Spanish authorities at the time tried to disguise his grave, but followers of Rizal found it and retrieved his body. Eventually his remains were placed beneath the monument pictured here.

Province of central Luzon Island in the Philippines; area 1,520 sq km/587 sq mi; population (1995) 1,313,000. The capital is Angono. Citrus fruit and vegetables are grown, and there is cattle-raising and aquaculture, although most of the population is employed in the nearby urban centres. The province is named after José Rizal (1861-96), the Philippine national hero.

The province is low and flat in the west with rolling hills in the east. The Montalban River flows through Rizal, and on it is sited the Montalban Dam supplying the Metropolitan Manila area with water.

Rizal was once regarded as an industrial province, but the cities of Caloocan, Pasay, and Quezon have now been transferred to the Metropolitan Manila area.
