Rizzi, Carlo (1960- )

Italian conductor. He studied in Milan and made his debut at the Angelicum there in 1982, with Donizetti's L'ajo nell'imbarrazzo. He conducted Falstaff at Parma in 1985 and has appeared throughout Italy with Don Giovanni, Tancredi, and Beatrice di Tenda. In 1988 he made his British debut, at the Buxton Festival, with Donizetti's Torquato Tasso. He has given Lucrezia Borgia with Australian Opera; Tosca with Opera North; and, after 1990, Cenerentola and Il viaggio a Reims at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. He was appointed music director Welsh National Opera in 1992 (Elektra, Le Comte Ory and Rigoletto) and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York in 1993, with Il barbiere di Siviglia. He also has a large concert repertory.
