Roa Bastos, Augusto (1917–2005)

Paraguayan writer. He wrote short stories and novels, mainly about social injustice and violence, using magic realism. Hijo de hombre/Son of Man (1960) deals with Paraguay's history and the Chaco War (1932–35) between Bolivia and Paraguay, in which he fought.

Other works include the short-story collections El trueno entre las hojas/Thunder Among the Leaves (1953) and El baldío/The Untilled (1966), and the novel Yo el supreme/The Supreme (1974).
