Roanoke County

County in west-central Virginia; area 650 sq km/251 sq mi; population (1990) 79,300. Its administrative headquarters is Salem. It lies to the west of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in a rich agricultural region. The cities of Salem and Roanoke (which is in the county but administratively separate from it) are the major manufacturing centres in the area.
