Robards, Jason, Jr (1922–2000)

US stage and film actor. He gained public and critical acclaim as a stage actor in Eugene O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh (1956) and Long Day's Journey Into Night (1957), and continued to create a number of distinguished roles on stage over the next four decades. He made his film debut in The Journey (1959) and portrayed a series of outstanding characters in many films, winning Academy Awards as Best Supporting Actor in All the President's Men (1976) and Julia (1977).

He was born in Chicago, the son of a once-famous stage and film actor, Jason Robards Sr (1892–1963). He served seven years in the US Navy, survived the attack on Pearl Harbor, and was awarded the Navy Cross. He came to New York City and supported himself by taxidriving and teaching while gaining experience in television dramas, radio soap operas, and bit parts in plays.

In December 1999 he received the Kennedy Center Honors award for lifetime achievement in the performing arts.
