Burke, Robert O'Hara (1821–1861)

Irish-born Australian explorer who in 1860–61 made the first south–north crossing of Australia (from Victoria to the Gulf of Carpentaria), with William Wills (1834–1861). Both died on the return journey, and only one of their party survived.

Burke was born in County Galway, Ireland, but had a cosmopolitan upbringing in Europe. After being educated in Belgium, he entered the Austrian army in 1840. Returning to Ireland, he joined the Royal Irish Constabulary in 1848, and in 1853 emigrated to Melbourne, Australia, where he served as a police inspector in the goldfields of Victoria. On Burke and Wills' fateful expedition, dissensions caused delays to a relief party, which the explorers only narrowly missed meeting up with.
