Joffrey Ballet

US ballet company founded in New York by dancers and choreographers Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino in 1956, known for its eclectic repertoire and use of modern dance. Arpino, artistic director since Joffrey's death in 1988, moved the company to Chicago, Illinois, in 1995 and renamed it the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago.

Originally named the Robert Joffrey Ballet, the company changed its name to the City Center Joffrey Ballet in 1966 and became internationally renowned, later changing its name again to the Joffrey Ballet. Joffrey was known for his original choreography and use of classical material as well as commissioning of a variety of works from unknown choreographers.
