Roberto Devereux, Conte d'Essex

Opera by Gaetano Donizetti (libretto by Salvatore Cammarano, based on Jacques Ancelot's tragedy Elisabeth d'Angleterre), produced at the Teatro San Carlo, Naples, on 2 October 1837. The story concerns Robert Devereux, who wears Queen Elizabeth's ring, which guarantees him protection. But he tears it off for love of Sarah, wife of the Duke of Nottingham.

Opera by Saverio Mercadante (libretto by Felice Romani, based on Corneille's Comte d'Essex), produced at La Scala, Milan, on 10 March 1833.
