Robertson, Alec

Robertson, Alec (1892–1982)

English musicologist. He was in charge of the music talks for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Home Service from 1940. His books include The Interpretation of Plainchant, Art and Religion, Dvořák, and Requiem: Music of Mourning and Consolation.

He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and became an organist and choirmaster in 1913. After serving in World War I, he lectured at the London County Coucil evening institutes and in 1920 became lecturer and later head of the Gramophone company's education department. He lived in Rome for four years to study plainsong, before joining the BBC.
