Robinson, Gerold

Robinson, Gerold (Tanquary) (1892–1971)

US Slavic studies specialist. He was best known for his research on agrarian Russia while teaching at Columbia University 1924–71. During World War II he was chief of the USSR Division, the Research and Analysis Branch of the Office of Strategic Services 1941–45, and was awarded the Medal of Freedom in 1947.

He was born in Chase City, Virginia. He was a member of the editorial boards of the Dial in 1919 and the Freeman 1920–24. He was author of Rural Russia Under the Old Regime 1932, and numerous other books and articles.
