Rocha

Department in southeast Uruguay, with a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean; area 10,551 sq km/4,074 sq mi; population (1996) 66,601. The capital is the city of Rocha, 165 km/103 mi east of Montevideo. The coast is fringed with sand dunes, behind which are tidal lakes and small lagoons. Cattle and sheep are farmed widely, while arable farming centres on the production of cereals.

The department has remains of colonial port fortresses, such as those at San Miguel and Santa Teresa.
