Rochdale Pioneers

In Britain, the founders of the cooperative movement; a group of Lancashire workers who opened a cooperative shop in Rochdale in 1844 inspired by the ideas of Robert Owen. The profits were divided among all the members of the cooperative rather than among a restricted group of shareholders.

Clegg Hall Mills dates back to the mid-19th century when it was bought by James Tweedale, one of the founding members of the early co-operative Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society.
The Rochdale Equitable Pioneers Society existed at a time when people were rioting in the streets over the high prices and poor quality of food.
