Roche, Jerome (1942–1994)

English musicologist. Early Italian music was at the centre of his research and he published books on Palestrina (1971), the Italian madigral (1972), and Lassus (1982).

He studied at Cambridge University 1959–67, and was lecturer at Durham from 1967. With his wife Elizabeth he edited the Dictionary of Early Music, from the Troubadours to Monteverdi (1981). He was also author of North Italian Church Music in the Age of Monteverdi (1984) and The Flower of Italian Madigrals (1988).
