Roche, Stephen (1959– )

Irish cyclist. One of the outstanding riders of his generation, in 1987 he became only the second cyclist after Eddy Merckx of Belgium to win the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy), and the world professional road-race championship in the same year. He turned professional in 1981, a year after competing at the Moscow Olympic Games, and rode until persistent injuries forced him to retire in 1993.
