La Roche-sur-Yon

Capital of the French département of Vendée; population (1999) 49,300. It is situated on a plateau overlooking the Yon valley. The town was purpose-built by Napoleon I in 1804, on the site of the old fortress of La Roche, and was called first Napoleon-Vendée and later Bourbon-Vendée. It is a market town and horse-breeding centre, and has flour mills.
