Rochefort
| Port in western France, southeast of La Rochelle and 15 km/9 mi from the mouth of the River Charente; population (1999) 25,800. Its industries include metal goods and machinery. The town dates from 1666. It was from here that Napoleon embarked for Plymouth on the Bellerophon on his way to final exile in 1815. |
