Rock Hill

City in York County, north-central South Carolina, USA; population (2000) 49,800. It is located 42 km/26 km south-southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina. Industries include chemicals, textiles, and paper products. Rock Hill is home to Winthrop College (1886) and to a junior college.

Named for a flint hill nearby, it was first settled in 1735. It became a railroad depot in 1851, and was a transfer point for Confederate troops and supplies in the Civil War. Cotton mills encouraged growth, and the damming of the Catawba River to the north of the of the city to form Lake Wylie provided a source of electric power.
