Rock Springs

Town in Sweetwater County, southwest Wyoming; population (1990) 19,000. It is situated on Bitter Creek, 21 km/13 mi east-northeast of Green River. It is a trade and processing centre for a livestock and mining region producing coal, soda ash, oil, and natural gas. Rock Springs provides a base for tourists, hunters, and anglers, and serves as a gateway to mountain recreation areas. It is home to Western Wyoming Community College (1959).

Rock Springs originated as a station on the Overland Trail in 1862 and developed as a coal mining and ranching centre after the Union Pacific arrived in 1868.
