Rockaway

Town in Morris County, northeast New Jersey; population (1990) 6,200. It is located 42 km/26 mi northwest of Newark. The area has produced munitions since the American Revolution, and much of Picatinny Arsenal is in the town. Among local manufactures in the 18th and 19th centuries were four-wheeled horse carriages that came to be known as ‘rockaways’.

The name also refers to a township (population (1990) 19,600). Communities in the township include the ghost town of Hibernia and Lake Telemark (population (1990) 1,100). The Rockaway River rises in northwest Morris County and flows south through the area, past Dover and Boonton, where it is dammed, to join the Passaic River west of Caldwell.
