Rockland County

County in southeast New York; area 453 sq km/175 sq mi; population (1990) 265,500. It is bordered by the Hudson River to the east and the New Jersey state line to the south and southwest. Its administrative headquarters is New City. Once primarily rural and agricultural, by the late 20th century it had become overwhelmingly suburban, with many residents commuting to work in New York City, and commercial and light manufacturing operations relocating here.

Rockland County includes such residential communities as Nyack, Nanuet, Spring Valley, Suffern, and Haverstraw. Recreational areas include a large section of Harriman State Park and Bear Mountain State Park, on the Hudson.
