Rockville

Town and administrative headquarters of Montgomery County, central Maryland; population (1990) 44,800. It is located 22 km/14 mi northwest of Washington, DC. Rockville is home to both federal (FDA) and private health industry offices, and to a campus of Montgomery College (1946). Commercial and research development related to government operations intensified in the town following World War II; it is now the site of aerospace, computer, nuclear, and communications facilities.

Settled during the Revolutionary War around Hungerford's Tavern, it was known as Montgomery Court House and Williamsburg before taking its present name in 1801. Rockville was raided frequently by Confederate troops during the Civil War. Zelda and F Scott Fitzgerald are buried in St Mary's Cemetery.
