Roddenberry, Gene (1921-1991)

US scriptwriter, producer, and director. He was a pilot before turning to writing, going on to work mainly in television. He is best known as the creator of the popular Star Trek series.

He was born in El Paso, Texas, and joined the airforce in 1941. He then moved to Los Angeles, and joined the police, while writing scripts for television programmes including Dragnet, Highway Patrol, and Dr Kildare. He also wrote Star Trek - The Motion Picture (1988), which sold nearly a million copies.
