Roebuck, John

Roebuck, John (1718–1794)

British chemist and physician. He took a degree in medicine at Edinburgh University and became a medical practitioner in Birmingham, England. He made scientific experiments in his spare time and, in 1746, invented the first commercial method for manufacturing sulphuric acid, the lead-chamber process. Later he helped to found the iron industry in Scotland. Roebuck was born in Sheffield, England.
