Roemer, Michael

Roemer, Michael (1928– )

German-born US film director. He worked on a number of educational short films and documentaries with Louis De Rochemont before making his first fiction feature, Nothing but a Man (1964), highly acclaimed for its sensitive depiction of African-American life.

He was born in Berlin. After spending the war years in Britain, he went to the USA in 1945. He directed his first short subject, A Touch of the Times 1947–49, while he was still in college.
