Rogers, Bernard

Rogers, Bernard (1893–1968)

US composer. He studied at the New York Institute of Musical Art and with Bloch at Cleveland. He gained several prizes and distinctions and for a time was a music journalist. In 1938 he became professor of composition at the Eastman School of Music at Rochester, New York.

The Marriage of Aude (1931), The Warrior (1947), The Veil and The Nightingale (1940).

cantatas The Raising of Lazarus and The Exodus, Passion with organ accompaniment.

five symphonies (1926–59), overture The Faithful, Three Eastern Dances, Two Amer, Frescoes, Four Fairy Tales, The Supper at Emmaeus (1937), The Colours of War, The Dance of Salome (1940), The Song of the Nightingale, The Plains, The Sailors of Toulon, Invasion and Characters from Hans Andersen for orchestra; soliloquies for flute and strings and bassoon and strings, fantasy for flute, viola, and orchestra; Pastorale for 11 instruments, string quartet; Music for an Industrial Film for two pianos; songs.
