Rogers, Roy

Rogers, Roy (1912–1998)

US actor who moved to Hollywood from radio. He was a singing cowboy of the 1930s and 1940s, forming the group Sons of the Pioneers in 1934. His first Roy Rogers film was Under Western Stars (1938). He played outside his own series of Westerns in Lake Placid Serenade (1944), Son of Paleface (1952), Alias Jesse James (1959), and Mackintosh and TJ (1975).

His other films include The Big Show (1936) and My Pal Trigger (1946). Although he was confined to B films for most of his career, he appeared opposite Bob Hope and Jane Russell in Son of Paleface (1952). He starred in The Roy Rogers Show western series on US television 1951–64. He married his costar Dale Evans (1912–2001), who played in 20 of his films, in 1947.
