Roi d'Ys, Le

Opera by Edouard Lalo (libretto by E Blau), produced at the Opéra-Comique, Paris, on 7 May 1888. Ys is the submerged city of Debussy's piano prelude La Cathédrale engloutie. In the story, Margared, daughter of the King of Ys, breaks off her engagement to Karnac when she sees her childhood love Mylio. But Mylio now loves her sister Rozenn. Margared joins forces with Kernac for revenge; she sacrifices herself as she opens the sluices, flooding the city.
